Don’t Start Your Artificial Grass Installation Without These 4 Important Tools
March 31, 2023
Synthetic grass installation is an increasingly popular way to give your outdoor space a lush and vibrant look without the hassle of maintaining a real lawn. While the installation process may seem daunting, having the right tools and materials is essential for ensuring a high-quality result. If you’re planning to install turf grass for yourself or a client, make sure you have these four important installation tools to properly install high-quality synthetic grass landscaping.
1. Weed Barrier
It’s usually all but impossible for weeds to sprout up through artificial turf. However, they can still grow along the edges of the lawn or where seams are disrupted. If you want to ensure that your new synthetic turf installation doesn’t suffer from pesky weeds each year, make sure you utilize a weed barrier fabric during the installation process.
A weed barrier is a flexible, lightweight fabric laid on top of the sub-base and beneath the turf roll. It’s stretched smoothly across the installation area and secured to the soil below with staples or turf nails. If installed correctly, weed fabric acts as an effective barrier to prevent weeds from growing up through the turf while still allowing for proper drainage.
2. Artificial Turf Nails
Synthetic grass landscape nails are one of the most important tools for installing turf grass. These nails are specifically designed for securing pieces of turf to the soil and to each other.
Artificial turf nails are much stronger than regular nails or staples, and they’ll hold the turf grass in place more securely. Turf nails should be placed approximately every two feet to ensure that the turf is properly secured, or it may begin to lift prematurely, impacting your synthetic grass’ durability.
3. Seam Tape
Seam tape is another crucial synthetic grass installation accessory. This double-sided non-adhesive material is used to mend together two pieces of turf grass, giving the appearance of one seamless lawn. When used properly, seam tape should not be visible in your turf grass installation at all. Rather, it should help your turf rolls blend to create the illusion of one continuous landscape.
The double-sided material is used in conjunction with turf adhesive, where the dull top side of the tape is covered with adhesive glue to secure the synthetic turf product in place. Waterproof and weather-resistant, seam tape minimizes wear and tear over time and helps extend the lifespan of your turf, in addition to enhancing its final appearance.
4. Synthetic Grass Infill
Artificial grass infill is the most important finishing touch when installing artificial grass. Not only does it weigh your synthetic turf down and prevent it from wrinkling, but it also helps keep each blade upright, so your turf grass always looks natural and lush.
There are several types of infill available, including eco-friendly Envirofill and pet-friendly Zeolite Max. Generally, all high-quality infill products are eco-friendly, cost-effective and anti-microbial, but it’s best to consult with your client about their specific needs.
